Premalatha Vijayakanth

Premalatha Vijayakanth, whose birth happened on the 18th March 1969, is from Tamil Nadu, and she has obtained a B.A. in English Literature. She was a shot put and discus throw athlete at the national level before entering politics. She wed the film star-turned-politician Vijayakanth on the 31st of January, 1990; the couple has two sons, namely, Vijay Prabhakaran and Shanmuga Pandian.

Premalatha had a low political profile at the beginning; however, she started to take part in the activities of DMDK as her husband's health was getting worse and he was pulling out of active politics. Nevertheless, the party started to be a rajshri where she was the one among the shri of the party, by holding rallies and public meetings, and advocating for social welfare, grassroots outreach, and strengthening the party.

On the 19th of October, 2018, she was elected Treasurer of the DMDK; thus, it was a formal recognition of her leadership role after years of campaigning for the party. In December 2023, she was promoted to the position of the General Secretary of the DMDK, which was a step to strengthen the leadership after the ill health of Vijayakanth and his eventual death.

The party has been concentrating on the organisation building, alliances, and active engagement of the voters in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections of 2026, under her leadership. Premalatha has made the DMDK's presence in the political landscape of the states reconfirmed and brought back the state tours and rallies to the citizens and party workers.

By the year 2025, Premalatha Vijayakanth is still taking her position as General Secretary of DMDK and is formulating the party's strategy while ensuring the continuity of its legacy in the midst of alliance politics and state election preparations.
