Anand Sharma is an Indian politician, who currently serves as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha. Notably, he holds the position of Deputy Leader of the opposition in the upper house of the Indian Parliament. Prior to this, he had the privilege of serving as a Union Cabinet Minister in the Government of India.

Anand Sharma Biography

Anand Sharma was born on January 5, 1953, in Shimla to P.A. Sharma and Rani Sharma.

His political journey began in April 1984 when he was elected to the Rajya Sabha for the first time. Since then, he has held various significant positions both in Parliament and in the government.

In terms of his legislative roles, from April 2004 to August 2004, he served as a member of the Joint Committee on Salaries and Allowances of Members of Parliament and also contributed as a member of the Press Council of India.

During his tenure in Parliament, he actively participated in numerous committees. He was a member of the Committee on Government Assurances from 1988 to 1990, and from 1986 to 1989, he served on the Panel of Vice-Chairmen in the Rajya Sabha. Furthermore, his involvement extended to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Lok Pal Bill from 1985 to 1988 and the Committee on Petitions in the Rajya Sabha from 1984 to 1986.

In his ministerial capacities, Anand Sharma held several important portfolios. He served as Minister of Textiles twice, with additional charges, from July 12, 2011, to June 17, 2013, and from April 3, 2014, to May 26, 2014. He was also Minister of Commerce and Industry from May 22, 2009, to May 26, 2014. Earlier, he held the position of Minister of State in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting with additional charge from October 18, 2008, to May 22, 2009, and Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs from January 29, 2006, to May 22, 2009.

Anand Sharma, in addition to his political career, has also made significant contributions as an editor and author. In 2007, he edited "Gandhian Way: Peace, Nonviolence, and Empowerment" for the Indian National Congress. He continued his editorial work with "Journey of a Nation: Indian National Congress: 125 years" in 2010, followed by "Remembering Jawaharlal Nehru: A Life Dedicated to the Nation - 125 years" in 2016. His editorial endeavors extended to "India's Indira - A Centennial Tribute" in 2017.

Beyond his professional engagements, Anand Sharma enjoys various pastimes. Cricket, hiking, and traveling are among his favorite activities. He also finds pleasure in reading books on philosophy and history, as well as indulging in Indian and Western classical music.

On a personal front, Anand Sharma married Dr. Zenobia Sharma, and together, they are blessed with two sons. As of now, his net worth stands at Rs 16,81,60,425.
