Digvijay Singh was born in Indore to Balbhadra Singh and Aparna Kumari of the Raghogarh royal family (which was under Gwalior State), that is now part of Guna district, Madhya Pradesh. He did his schooling at The Daly College, Indore, and completed his engineering at Shri Govindram Seksaria Institute of Technology and Science (SGSITS), Indore. Although his family background gave him the exposure to public life at an early age, he never used his birthright; instead, through party organisation and local electoral work, he made his way to the court of public opinion.
Singh was a minister in the Madhya Pradesh state government controlled by the Congress party and headed by CM Arjun Singh during 1980-1984. After a politically frosty relationship with his successor, Sunderlal Patwa, he contested the elections in 1993 and became the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, and he effectively remained so for the following ten years (through 2003). Post his defeat in 2003, he took charge of the Congress party organisational roles at the national level and held a lot of senior party offices, among which his leadership positions in All India Congress Committee and his role as General Secretary in charge of organisation and election strategy were the most prominent ones.
On the personal front, Digvijay Singh was married to Asha Singh, who died in 2013, and the couple had four daughters and one son. He got married to television journalist Amrita Rai in April 2014. Politically, he contested for national and state elections at different times (including a Lok Sabha and the Assembly constituency in the 2010s), and then he shifted to the Upper House. He is presently a Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh and actively participates in parliamentary debates and in party coordination work.
