Dhiraj Prasad Sahu Biography

Dhiraj Prasad Sahu was born on November 23, 1955, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, to Sahab Baldeo Sahu and Shushila Devi. Hailing from a family with longstanding ties to the Congress party since India's independence, Sahu inherited a legacy of political engagement.

His journey in politics began in 1977, marked by his participation in the 'Jail Bharo Aandolan,' during which he was incarcerated in 1978. Over the years, Sahu held various significant positions within the political landscape. He served as the President of the Saundic Samaj in Jharkhand from 2003 to 2005 and took on roles such as Treasurer in organisations like the National Students Union of India (NSUI) at Ranchi University from 1978 to 1983.

Sahu's involvement with the Congress party deepened as he assumed roles such as Treasurer of the Lohardaga District Youth Congress from 1984 to 1990, and later, Treasurer of the Lohardaga District Congress Committee (DCC) from 1999 to 2000. His dedication led to his appointment as Treasurer of the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee from 2001 to July 2003 and again from February 2005 onward.

Additionally, he served as a member of various working committees, including those of the Lohardaga DCC and the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee. Sahu's commitment to political duties extended to his involvement in election management, notably in various constituencies such as Kanke, Ranchi, and Lohardaga.

In June 2009, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha. During this tenure, he served as a member of the Committee on Coal and Steel. Concurrently, he served as a Permanent Special Invitee to the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and a member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Power.

In July 2010, he was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha for a second term. From August 2010 to March 2011, he was a member of the Central Silk Board.

Following his election to the Rajya Sabha for a third term in May 2018, he served on the Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs, and Public Distribution from September 2014 to July 2016. From September 2018 onwards, he resumed his position as a member of the Committee on Coal, Mines, and Steel. Additionally, since October 2019, he has been serving as a member of both the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

Beyond his political commitments, Sahu remains engaged in social and community activities. He is associated with organizations like the Chhotanagpur Bauxite Worker’s Union and actively participates in social and sports organizations, including the Jharkhand Vaishya Maha Sammelan and the Ranchi Club.

In his leisure time, Sahu indulges in his passion for travel, wildlife, and reading books on history, underscoring his multifaceted personality and commitment to both political and personal pursuits.
