Dhiraj Prasad Sahu was born on November 23, 1955, in Ranchi, Jharkhand, to Sahab Baldeo Sahu and Shushila Devi. Hailing from a family with longstanding ties to the Congress party since India's independence, Sahu inherited a legacy of political engagement.
His journey in politics began in 1977, marked by his participation in the 'Jail Bharo Aandolan,' during which he was incarcerated in 1978. He served as the President of the Saundic Samaj in Jharkhand from 2003 to 2005 and took on roles such as Treasurer in organisations like the National Students Union of India (NSUI) at Ranchi University from 1978 to 1983.

His dedication led to his appointment as Treasurer of the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee from 2001 to July 2003 and again from February 2005 onward.
Additionally, he served as a member of various working committees, including those of the Lohardaga DCC and the Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee. Sahu's commitment to political duties extended to his involvement in election management, notably in various constituencies such as Kanke, Ranchi, and Lohardaga.
In June 2009, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha. During this tenure, he served as a member of the Committee on Coal and Steel. Concurrently, he served as a Permanent Special Invitee to the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, and a member of the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Power.
In July 2010, he was re-elected to the Rajya Sabha for a second term. From August 2010 to March 2011, he was a member of the Central Silk Board.
Following his election to the Rajya Sabha for a third term in May 2018, he served on the Committee on Food, Consumer Affairs, and Public Distribution from September 2014 to July 2016. From September 2018 onwards, he resumed his position as a member of the Committee on Coal, Mines, and Steel. Additionally, since October 2019, he has been serving as a member of both the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Power and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
Beyond his political commitments, Sahu remains engaged in social and community activities.
