Ajay Rai Biography

Ajay Rai, born on October 7, 1969, is an Indian politician affiliated with the Indian National Congress since 2012. Rai, a five-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Uttar Pradesh, currently serves as the Uttar Pradesh Congress chief. He will contest against PM Modi in Varanasi in the 2024 general elections.

Rai's political journey began with the Bharatiya Janata Party's student wing. He won three consecutive Legislative Assembly elections from the Kolasla constituency between 1996 and 2007 on a BJP ticket. However, Rai's departure from the BJP stemmed from being denied a Lok Sabha ticket, leading him to join the Samajwadi Party. Despite an unsuccessful bid in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he won the subsequent Legislative Assembly by-election from Kolasla as an independent. Rai's affiliation with the Indian National Congress began in 2012, winning the Assembly elections from the newly created Pindra constituency after the delimitation.

In the political arena, Rai contested for the Varanasi parliament seat in the 2014 and 2019 general elections under the Congress banner but was defeated by Narendra Modi on both occasions.

Born in Varanasi to Parvati Devi Rai and Surendra Rai, Rai hails from a Bhumihar Brahmin family with roots in Ghazipur district. He gained local notoriety as a 'bahubali' or strongman, with a history of involvement in criminal activities, particularly in association with Brijesh Singh.

Throughout his career, Rai faced legal challenges, including accusations related to criminal activities. Despite these hurdles, Rai has remained active in politics, participating in various elections and political activities, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, where his influence has been significant, especially in the Varanasi region.
