Advocate Sunny Joseph was born on 18 August 1952 in Thodupuzha, Kerala, into a Syro‑Malabar Catholic family to Joseph Vadakkekunnel and Rosakutty. He pursued his education with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws from Calicut University and practised as an advocate before entering full‑time politics. His professional grounding in law has been a hallmark of his political discourse and legislative engagement.
Joseph began his political life through the Kerala Students Union (KSU), the student wing of the Indian National Congress, and gradually rose through organisational ranks. He held significant positions such as Syndicate Member of Calicut University, President of local cooperative banks, Bar Association President in Mattannur, and President of the Kannur District Congress Committee, building a grassroots organisational base in northern Kerala.
He was first elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from Peravoor in 2011, defeating CPI(M) veteran K. K. Shailaja, and has since been re‑elected, making him a three‑time MLA from the constituency as a Congress representative. His electoral success in a region once considered a Left stronghold underscores his local appeal and strategic campaign skills.
In May 2025, Joseph was appointed President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), succeeding K. Sudhakaran, in a major organisational change ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. In this role, he has led the party’s strategy and mobilisation efforts in Kerala, emphasising unity and electoral preparedness.
As of 2026, he remains a senior Congress leader guiding organisational decisions and legislative priorities in the state.
