Biography
Sunil Kumar Jakhar is an MP and President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. He was Elected consecutively three times from Abohar constituency (2002-2017), he was a Leader of opposition in Punjab Vidhan Sabha from 2012-2017. He is a member of the Indian National Congress(INC). He was elected from Gurdaspur, Punjab to the Lok Sabha the lower house of Indian parliament in a by-election.
He first became a member of Punjab Vidhan Sabha from Abohar in 2002.In 2007 and 2012, he was re-elected from Abohar. He became member of parliament after winning a by-election in Gurudaspur.
Controversy
On 7 January 2017, Jakhar sent a complaint to the Punjab chief election officer alleging that local Shiromani Akali Dal leader Shivlal Doda and his nephew used seven different mobile numbers while in a Fazilka prison.
1 Sept. 2018: He became the Member, Standing Committee on Science & Technology, Environment & Forests.

On 14 Oct. 2017, he was elected to 16th Lok Sabha in Gurdaspur bye-election.

He lost in Assembly Elections against BJP candidate Arun Narang with the margin of just 3279 votes.
2012
He again successfully contested Vidhan Sabha Elections and became MLA from the same constituency. He defeated an independent candidate Shiv Lal Doda.
2007
He was re-elected as MLA from Abohar constituency after defeating former BJP MLA Ram Kumar by around 17 thousand votes.
