Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was an Indian aerospace scientist, who was the 11th President of India as well.
Kalam was born in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu to Jainulabdeen Marakayar and Ashiamma.
He completed his study in physics and aerospace engineering. Kalam spent the next four decades as a scientist and science administrator, mainly at the DRDO and ISRO.
He thus came to be known as the 'Missile Man of India' for his work on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology.
Apart from this, he played a major role in organisational, technical, and political part of India's Pokhran-II nuclear tests in 1998.
However, Kalam was elected as the 11th president of India with the support of both the ruling BJP and the then-opposition Indian National Congress.
Kalam received several prestigious awards that includes the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour.
On 27 July 2015, Kalam collapsed and died from an apparent cardiac arrest.
