Tapas Roy, a veteran leader in the Trinamool Congress (TMC), served as MLA since 1996. Initially elected with Congress, he later joined TMC, winning the 2001 and subsequent elections.
Roy has represented various constituencies, notably Baranagar since 2011. He held positions of responsibility, including deputy chief whip. However, amid controversy surrounding alleged irregularities in civic recruitments and an ED raid on his residence, Roy resigned as MLA.
Expressing dissatisfaction with TMC's response to the situation, he joined the BJP before the 18th Lok Sabha election. Currently, Roy contests from the Kolkata Uttar seat for the BJP.
