Rakibul Hussain

Rakibul Hussain was born on 1 January 1964 in Assam and became involved in public life through student and youth political activities. He entered mainstream politics at a young age and quickly emerged as a prominent leader in the Indian National Congress in central Assam.

He first entered the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Samaguri constituency and established a long-standing electoral association with the region. Over successive terms, he built a strong constituency base, focusing on local development, education, and social welfare initiatives.

During Congress-led governments in Assam, Hussain served as a Cabinet Minister, holding portfolios such as Forest, Environment, Panchayat & Rural Development, and Information & Public Relations. His ministerial tenure expanded his responsibilities to statewide administration and policy implementation.

Following the transition of Congress to the opposition after 2016, he assumed senior leadership roles within the legislature party, including serving as Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly. His role has involved legislative scrutiny and coordination of opposition strategy.

As of 2026, Rakibul Hussain continues to serve as an elected MLA from Samaguri and remains active in Assam’s legislative and party leadership.
