Pradyut Bordoloi was born on 28 April 1959 in Margherita, Assam. He completed his higher education with a Master of Arts from Cotton College, Gauhati University, and a Master of Philosophy from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi. During his university years, he was actively involved in student politics and served as President of the Assam unit of the National Students’ Union of India.
Bordoloi began his legislative career when he was first elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly from the Margherita constituency in a by-election in 1998. He was subsequently re‑elected in 2001, 2006, and 2011, representing the same constituency. His electoral successes established him as an important Congress leader in Upper Assam.
During his tenure in the Assam government under Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Bordoloi served as a minister from 2001 until 2015, holding portfolios including Industries and Commerce, Power, Public Enterprises, and, from 2014, Education. He was widely involved in policy decision‑making in these sectors over multiple terms.
In 2019, Bordoloi transitioned to national politics by winning the Lok Sabha seat from Nagaon (Nowgong). He retained this seat in the 2024 general elections, illustrating sustained voter support in his constituency. Beyond electoral roles, he has engaged in parliamentary debates, raised regional development issues, and participated in organisational functions of the Congress party in Assam.
As of 2026, he remains a senior MP actively involved in legislative responsibilities and state political initiatives.
