Pijush Hazarika was born on 26 March 1976 in Assam; his father was Late Dulal Chandra Hazarika. He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree and became actively involved in student and youth politics before entering mainstream electoral politics. His early political engagement helped him establish a base in the Jagiroad region.

He entered the Assam Legislative Assembly in 2006 as a candidate of the Indian National Congress from the Jagiroad constituency. He retained the seat in 2011, becoming a known figure in state politics during the Tarun Gogoi-led government.

In 2015, Hazarika resigned from the Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2016 Assam Assembly election. He was re-elected from Jagiroad in 2016 as a BJP candidate and inducted into the Sarbananda Sonowal-led cabinet, marking a significant political shift in his career.
