Biography

Parkash Singh Badal, original name Parkash Singh Dhillon, is an Indian politician and government official who rose to become president from 1996–2008 of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), a Sikh-focused regional political party in Punjab state. Badal was born into a family of landowning farmers in what is now western Punjab state and earned a B.A. degree from Forman Christian College in Lahore which is now in Pakistan. Parkash Singh Badal is also the patron of Akali Dal. He served as the president of the party from 1995 to 2008, only to be replaced by his son Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Parkash Singh Badal’s first foray into politics was in 1947 when he was elected the leader of his village.

Parkash Singh Badal was first elected to the Punjab state assembly in 1957 and has been elected an MLA nine times since then.


Badal launched many schemes such as free ambulance service, Talwandi Sabo thermal plant, etc.

As the patron of SAD Parkash Singh Badal exercises a great influence on the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.

In December 2011, Badal was bestowed upon the title of Panth Rattan Fakhr-e-Qaum (literally "Jewel of the religion, pride of the community") by the Akal Takht.
