He started his political career by working in politics and Dravidian political circles and community activities in the eastern districts of the city. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party system helped him progress through its ranks, which enabled him to establish political connections throughout Chennai.

The beginning of his political career occurred when he won the Radhakrishnan Nagar constituency elections as a Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly during the 2001 elections, which he repeated in 2006.
