Nupur Sharma

Nupur Sharma was born on April 23, 1985, in New Delhi. She pursued her education in Delhi and later studied law, which laid the foundation for her interest in constitutional issues, public policy, and political debate. During her academic years, she became actively involved in student politics, which served as her entry point into organised political activity.

Her political journey formally began with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s student and youth wings, where she worked on campus-level mobilisation and ideological outreach. These early roles helped her gain visibility within party circles and provided experience in political organisation and public engagement.

In 2015, Nupur Sharma contested the Delhi Legislative Assembly election from the New Delhi constituency as a BJP candidate. Although she lost the election to Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, the campaign significantly raised her public profile and positioned her as an emerging party spokesperson.

Following the election, Sharma was appointed as a national spokesperson of the BJP, a role that brought her regular appearances on television debates and political panels. She became known for her aggressive debating style and articulation of party positions on governance, nationalism, and socio-political issues.

In 2022, Sharma became the centre of a major national and international controversy following remarks made during a televised debate. The incident led to diplomatic reactions, widespread public debate, and disciplinary action by the BJP, including suspension from primary membership.
