Narayan Rane, born on April 10, 1952, in Konkan, is a seasoned Indian politician with a rich and diverse career spanning several decades.
In 1985, Rane commenced his political journey as a Municipal Councillor in the Chembur area of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. He then transitioned into state-level politics, becoming a Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly from 1990 to 2014.
Rane's political prowess saw him assume various ministerial roles within the Maharashtra state government. Notably, he served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra from February 1 to October 17, 1999. His tenure also included significant positions such as Minister of Revenue, Minister of Industries, and Minister of Dairy Development, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries.
From October 1999 to July 2005, Rane held the position of Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
In 2005, Rane once again took up the mantle of Minister of Revenue in the Maharashtra government, a position he held until December 2008. His contributions extended beyond state politics as he was elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 2018.
Rane's commitment to public service led to his appointment as Minister of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises from July 7, 2021. Prior to this, he served on various committees, including the Consultative Committee for the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Committee on Agriculture.
Outside politics, Rane has been actively involved in sports, representing the Department of Income Tax in cricket from 1971 to 1984. He enjoys cricket, travelling, and reading.
In his personal life, Rane is married to Neelam, with whom he has been blessed with two sons.
