Maneka Sanjay Gandhi Biography

Maneka Gandhi was born on August 26, 1956, in New Delhi to Lt. Col. T. S. Anand and Amteshwar Anand. She studied at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, and later at Lady Shri Ram College. In 1974, she married Sanjay Gandhi, son of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and the couple had a son, Varun Gandhi.

Following the death of Sanjay Gandhi in 1980, her relationship with the Gandhi family deteriorated, leading to her exit from the prime minister’s residence. She subsequently charted an independent political path, distancing herself from the Congress establishment and emerging as a distinct political voice.

She contested the 1984 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi but lost to Rajiv Gandhi. In 1989, she joined the Janata Dal and won from Pilibhit, marking her entry into Parliament. Over the years, she secured multiple electoral victories from Pilibhit and Aonla, including wins as an independent candidate in 1998 and 1999.

In 2004, she joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, consolidating her position in national politics. She went on to serve in several ministerial roles, most notably as Union Minister for Women and Child Development from 2014 to 2019. She has also represented Sultanpur in Parliament in recent years.

Beyond politics, she is one of India’s leading animal rights advocates.
