M. V. Govindan, the one and only Govindan Master, came to this world in 1953 at Morazha, born to Kunjambu and Madhavi Amma. He earned a diploma in physical education and taught as a sports teacher before he left the job for the sake of politics and organising.
He started his political work with Balasangham and later took up leadership positions in the Kerala Students Youth Federation (KSYF) at Kannur, where he was President and Secretary. He was one of the first to be a part of the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and was later elected a member of the Central Committee, followed by the positions of State President and State Secretary of DYFI. He took the plunge into Communism, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1970, and then occupied the position of Kasargod Area Secretary. In 1991, he was inducted into the CPI(M) State Committee.
Govindan Master made his debut at the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1996 after winning the election from the Taliparamba constituency, beating the Indian National Congress's Satheesan Pacheni by 70,550 votes. He again won the election from Taliparamba in 2001. When, in 2006, he came back to the Assembly from the same constituency, he beat K. Surendran of Congress by 15,287 votes and thus got 76,975 votes.
From his very beginning in the legislative field, he was a key person in party communication and media. He was the Chief Editor of Deshabhimani, which is the official daily of the CPI(M). In 2006, he was voted into the CPI(M) State Secretariat, which made his position very strong in the party hierarchy. He later rose to the CPI(M) Central Committee.
Moreover, he engages in leading activities of great social significance as he is the Vice President of the All India Agricultural Workers Union and the President of the Kerala State Karshaka Thozhilali Union (KSKTU). His influence is further extended by his position in the CPI(M) State Secretariat.
Back in 2016, M. V. Govindan was again voted in as a representative for Taliparamba, and that was followed by another victory in 2021. Considering his age and ability to handle the organization, he was made the State Secretary of CPI(M) Kerala State Committee in 2023.
In the year 2025, M. V. Govindan is still in the position of an MLA representing Taliparamba, holding the post of CPI(M) Kerala State Secretary, being a Central Committee member, and being a senior leader of the party's mass and trade union organizations.
