Gangasandra Siddappa Basavaraj is fondly known as G.S. Basavaraj, is a former member of INC, who won his first Lok Sabha polls from Tumkur in 1984. He served three terms as MP of Tumkur in 1984, 1989 and 1999. In 2009, he severed ties with INC and contested Tumkur Lok Sabha polls as BJP candidate. He won the election by defeating Muddahanumegowda S.P of JDS. However, he failed to retain the seat in 2014 Lok Sabha polls. He contested 2019 elections from Tumkur as a BJP candidate.
