Ashwini Vaishnaw is an Indian politician, IAS officer, and engineer who is currently serving as the Union Cabinet Minister for Railways, Communications, and Electronics & Information Technology. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and represents Odisha in the Rajya Sabha.

Vaishnaw, who made a name for himself as an able administrator with a tech background, has contributed significantly to pushing forward India’s digital infrastructure, modernising railways, and reforming the telecom sector.

Ashwini Vaishnaw Biography

Ashwini Vaishnaw, born on July 18, 1970, in Rajasthan to Dau Lal and Saraswati Vaishnaw is a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and an Indian politician. A 1994-batch IAS officer, he is recognised for his role in the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework for infrastructure development. He has previously served as a collector in Cuttack and Balasore districts. In 2008, he earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Upon returning to India, Vaishnaw became the Managing Director of GE Transportation. He later served as the Vice President of locomotives and Head of Urban Infrastructure Strategy at Siemens. In 2012, he transitioned from the corporate world to entrepreneurship, founding Vee Gee Auto Components Pvt Ltd and Three Tee Auto Logistics Pvt Ltd in Gujarat.

He started his political career in the Prime Minister's Office during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's administration. After the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) lost the election in 2004, he served as the deputy chairman of Mormugao Port Trust two years later.

Vaishnaw has been a Member of the Rajya Sabha from Odisha since June 2019 and he assumed the role of Railway Minister on July 8, 2021.

Currently, Vaishnaw holds significant positions in the Indian government as the Minister of Railways, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, and Minister of Electronics and Information Technology.

Outside his social and political duties, he finds solace in reading about the development journeys of nations. On a personal front, he is married to Sunita Vaishnaw, and they have two children. His net worth stands at Rs 17,18,20,153.
