Anuja Kedar hails from a prominent political lineage as the granddaughter of Barrister Sheshrao Krishnarao Wankhede, a respected figure who once served as Speaker of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The renowned Wankhede Stadium, is named in his honour.
She recently submitted her nomination papers, and her candidacy was largely anticipated to be formally confirmed. Her husband, Sunil Kedar, is also a prominent figure, being the son of former minister Chhatrapal Kedar and a five-time MLA from Savner.
In December 2023, Sunil Kedar was disqualified as an MLA. This decision followed his conviction and a five-year prison sentence by a Nagpur court, tied to an alleged Rs 150 crore cooperative bank scandal, which first came to light over two decades ago.
Sunil Kedar, who is a senior leader from Vidarbha region, is considered close to the Gandhi-family.
