Yagati Suryanarayana Venkatesha Datta was born on 24 June 1954 in Yagati, Kadur taluk, Chikmagalur district of Karnataka. He completed his B.Sc. from National College, Basavanagudi, Bangalore, in 1973 and began his professional life as a mathematics tutor for secondary and collegiate students in Bengaluru’s Rajajinagar area.

Datta entered active politics through the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)), where he became involved in party organisational work. Between 2001 and 2007, he served as General Secretary of JD(S), contributing to internal coordination and party strategy at the state level.

In 2006, he was nominated as a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council, serving in the upper house of the state legislature until 2012. This role provided him experience in legislative business and state-level political engagement.

Datta then contested the 2013 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election from the Kadur constituency as a JD(S) candidate and was elected MLA, serving in the Assembly from 2013 to 2018. During this term, he focused on constituency issues and legislative participation in Bengaluru and in the Chikmagalur district.

In early 2023, Datta briefly joined the Indian National Congress, ahead of state elections, but after being denied a ticket, he returned to the Janata Dal (Secular) later that year.

As of 2026, he remains associated with JD(S) and active in politics and public engagements, including community outreach and mentoring young leaders.
