Vinesh Phogat, born on August 25, 1994, in Bhiwani, Haryana, is regarded as one of the finest wrestlers to emerge from India. Coming from a family with a strong wrestling heritage, she is the daughter of Vinod Phogat and Sarla Devi. Her uncle, Mahavir Singh Phogat, a respected coach and Dronacharya Awardee, introduced her to wrestling at a young age. Vinesh grew up in a household where wrestling was a way of life, following in the footsteps of her cousins Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari.

Despite the sport's challenges, including societal pressures that viewed wrestling as a man’s game, Vinesh remained determined. At just nine years old, she faced the personal tragedy of losing her father. Yet, her passion for wrestling, nurtured by her family, helped her overcome these early obstacles, and she has since become one of India’s most prominent athletes.

She resigned from Indian Railways and joined the Indian National Congress on 6th September 2024.
