Upendra Kushwaha was born on February 6, 1960. He is an Indian politician as well as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from Bihar. After going unopposed in a by-election necessitated by the election of previous members to the Lok Sabha, he assumed the position on August 27, 2024. Kushwaha was with the Samata Party at the beginning of his political career and then moved to Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)). He has held many posts in that party. In 2014, on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet, he was made the Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development. One year later, he merged the Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP), which he had established in 2013, with JD(U). He re-established the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM), a political party for the welfare of backward classes and regional development, in 2023. Kushwaha was the NDA's nominee for the Rajya Sabha by-election from Bihar in August 2024. On August 21, 2024, he legally presented his nomination papers. Unopposed, he was declared the winner on August 27, 2024. He made it public that he had been receiving death threats, which he reported to the police in June 2025. According to him, the Lawrence Bishnoi gang was behind the terror calls. The cyber police took action, and a criminal investigation was launched. After that, one of the perpetrators of the threatening calls was brought into custody. Kushwaha has a Master's in Political Science from B.R. Ambedkar Bihar University and has been aggressively involved in the politics of Bihar, supporting the rights of the backward classes and regional development.

Janata Dal United leader Upendra Kushwaha is all geared up to form a new political party in Bihar.
He also conducted an open session for two days on February 19 and 20 for getting suggestions from the JDU workers.
