Umang Singhar

Umang Singhar is a tribal Guy from the Dhar district, which is located in the western part of Madhya Pradesh, and his tribal origin has greatly impacted his political identity and public work. He started his political career with the Indian National Congress and gradually gained power in the tribal area of the Malwa–Nimar region.

In 2008, he won the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election from Gandhwani, and this was his first step towards becoming a young tribal leader. The 2013 election was also won by him; thus, his power was further strengthened within the party at the state level.

After the elections in 2018, Mahatma Gandhi's Kamal Nath government took office, and Singhar was appointed as the Minister of Forests in the state cabinet. His term was focused on issues surrounding forest rights, tribal welfare, and, to some extent, environmental administration.

In 2020, when the Congress government fell, he remained active as a vocal opposition leader and was able to keep his position in the 2023 Assembly elections. His legislative experience and leadership over tribal MLAs have been recognized by appointing him as the Leader of the Opposition in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly.

As of 2026, Umang Singhar is still the Gandhwani MLA and Leader of the Opposition; therefore, he remains the main character in state opposition politics.
