Thawar Chand Gehlot Biography

Thawar‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌ Chand Gehlot, born on 18th April 1948 in the Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh. After completing his education from the same place, he became actively involved in social and political movements and thus entered public life. His house-bound political career at the beginning was largely associated with the BJP's organisational work and its ideological network in central India.

One by one, he became recognised as a very significant Dalit leader of the BJP in M.P., and besides that, he was entrusted with many organisational duties in the party at the district as well as state levels. His knack for reaching out to the grassroots party workers and the most backward sections of society bore political fruit in the long run in the form of his occupying a dominant position in the political arena for a long time.

Gehlot has a history of representing his state in the national legislature through the Rajya Sabha. He has been elected from Madhya Pradesh for several terms. While working as a parliamentarian, he was referred to in talk shows as one who always contributed to parliamentary debates regarding justice for the underprivileged, schemes for their betterment, issues relating to the constitution, and the development of villages. His fame then flowed from his induction into the Union Council of Ministers.

He was the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment from 2014 to 2021 in the Narendra Modi government. As such, he was the main person behind the passing of legislation and welfare programs for SCs, OBCs, PwDs, and senior citizens. In September 2021, he got the charge of the Governor of Karnataka. Up to 2025, he is still in this ‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‌capacity.
