K. Ajith was born on 25 May 1971 in Vaikom, located in the Kottayam district of Kerala. He is the son of Dalit leader and former CPI leader M. K. Kesavan.
He began his political career with the Communist Party of India (CPI) and was actively involved in party organisation, serving in roles such as a district council member in Kottayam.
He entered legislative politics after being elected as a Member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Vaikom constituency in 2006, and was re-elected in 2011, serving two consecutive terms.
After a long association of around four decades with the CPI, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in March 2026, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s handling of Dalit issues.
His political career reflects a transition from left-wing politics to a national party framework, marking a significant ideological shift in Kerala’s political landscape.
In the 2026 Assembly election, he contested as the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate and secured 20,297 votes. He was defeated by his nearest rival by 32,647 votes, resulting in a decisive loss.
