Sumitra Mahajan is one of the senior most members of the Indian Parliament. She has won eight consecutive elections in the Indore constituency in Madhya Pradesh. Popularly known was Tai among her constituents, she served as a union minister for a spell in the Vajpayee administration. She is known for her association and support to several cultural organisations/forums promoting literary activities.

Sumitra Mahajan the second woman after Meira Kumar to be elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. She ran for the first time and won the Lok Sabha elections in 1989, against former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Prakash Chandra Sethi. She holds the unique distinction of being the only woman member of Parliament to get elected eight consecutive times from the same Constituency Speaker of the Lok Sabha. She participated in discussions, delivered lectures and public discourses on the teachings of Mahabharata and Geeta, Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar. She is the former President of Marathi Academy, Madhya Pradesh and the Chairperson of Ahilya Utsav Committee, Indore and Contemporary Study Centre, Indore. She conceptualised and Chaired the first ever National Conference of Women Legislators and the first ever National Legislators Conference in New Delhi in March 2018.
