Sulata Deo

Sulata Deo emerged in Odisha’s political landscape through sustained involvement in social initiatives and organisational work aligned with the Biju Janata Dal. Her early political activity focused on community engagement, women-centric programmes, and grassroots mobilisation, which helped her build credibility within party structures at the district and state levels.

As her organisational role expanded, Deo became associated with policy advocacy concerning women, children, and marginalised groups. She played an active role in outreach programmes and awareness initiatives aimed at social equity, which strengthened her visibility within Odisha’s political and civil society circles.

Her transition to national politics came with her election to the Rajya Sabha from Odisha, marking a significant milestone in her political career. In the Upper House, she began contributing to legislative debates, raising concerns related to welfare policies, education reform, healthcare access, and gender-sensitive governance.

As a parliamentarian, Deo served on and engaged with various parliamentary committees, where she examined policy frameworks and administrative functioning related to social development sectors. Her committee work reflected a focus on accountability, inclusive growth, and citizen-oriented governance.

Sulata Deo has also represented India in international and inter-parliamentary forums, participating in discussions on democracy, social inclusion, and women’s political participation. These assignments positioned her as part of India’s legislative diplomacy efforts and broadened her engagement beyond domestic policymaking.

As of 2026, she continues to function as a sitting Rajya Sabha Member and senior BJD leader, remaining actively involved in parliamentary proceedings, policy advocacy, and international engagements focused on social justice and inclusive development.
