Shamanuru Shivashankarappa came into the world on June 16, 1931, in Davanagere, Karnataka. He immediately ventured into public service, and eventually, he became an influential figure in politics, industry, and education in the state where he was born. For years, he mixed up his lawmaking activities with playing leadership roles in community and social organisations.
He first dipped his toes into politics at the grassroots level, and later he was the Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha elected from Davanagere from 1998 to 1999. He then concentrated on state politics only and was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Davanagere South several times starting in 2004. During his lifetime, he was applauded for his organisational work with the Congress party and also for being the treasurer of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee for a long time.
Shivashankarappa was also one of the ministers in the Karnataka cabinet; among other things, he was Minister of Horticulture and Agricultural Marketing. Politically, he was a different personality, but that did not mean he was not educated and lacked vision; the truth was that he was a well-known educationist and industrialist as well. He steered the wheel in the establishment of various educational institutions and other business ventures through which he gained success. He was the president of the All India Veerashaiva-Lingayat Mahasabha, a community organisation, which had the majority of people of the state as members.
In his 90s, after devoting his whole life to serving the public, Shamanuru Shivashankarappa breathed his last on 14 December 2025. At the time he died, he was among the oldest and longest-serving legislators in India and was always remembered for being the one who made valuable contributions to public life and community institutions.
