Sanjoy Kishan was born on 15 July 1971 in Assam; his father was Lt. Sonaram Kishan. Coming from a background closely connected to tea garden communities in Upper Assam, he pursued education up to the Higher Secondary level before becoming involved in grassroots social and political activities. His early engagement with labour and community concerns shaped his political trajectory.
He entered electoral politics and was elected as MLA from the Tinsukia Assembly constituency in the 2016 Assam Assembly election as a Bharatiya Janata Party candidate. His victory marked the beginning of his legislative role in representing tea tribe and labour-intensive regions of the state.
Following his election in 2016, Kishan was inducted into the Assam cabinet and entrusted with responsibilities related to Labour Welfare and Tea Tribe Welfare. His ministerial tenure focused on welfare schemes, labour rights, and administrative oversight of departments connected to tea garden workers.
In the 2021 Assam Assembly election, he was re-elected from Tinsukia and continued in the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led cabinet. As a minister, he has been involved in policy discussions concerning labour welfare, community development, and social sector governance.
As of 2026, he continues serving as a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Assam, overseeing departmental administration and welfare-related initiatives for tea tribe communities.
