S. P. Velumani is a political leader in Tamil Nadu, India. He was born in Sugunapuram (Kuniyamuthur), Coimbatore, on 10 May 1969 to E. A. Palanisamy and Mayilathal. He has a Master’s degree and M.Phil. from Annamalai University. He started his political journey from the grassroots in the western part of Tamil Nadu and ended up being a powerful AIADMK organizer in the Coimbatore region.
Velumani contested the assembly election for the first time in 2006 when he got elected as an MLA from the Perur constituency. Subsequently, he moved to Thondamuthur and won in 2011, 2016, and 2021, thereby proving that he had strong voter support over the years. During the AIADMK governments, he was in the state cabinet and had the portfolio of Municipal Administration, Rural Development, and Law.
He was in charge of urban local bodies, municipal corporations, rural development, and governance reforms. He is an important figure in the party who has held the position of Headquarters Secretary of AIADMK since 13 July 2022. His rise to power has been marred by corruption allegations that have been made against him in the last couple of years.
In March 2022, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Directorate (DVAC) started a probe into Velumani for disproportionate assets. The searches led to the discovery of some gold and certain documents related to the cryptocurrency holdings. In September 2022 and again in 2025, Velumani was implicated in a ₹98.25-crore contract fraud case alleging that the fake tenders in the municipality were given between 2015 and 2018 to the companies linked to him.
The court had temporarily dismissed the case, but later it was reopened after the new evidence. He is still the MLA of Thondamuthur despite the court cases going on, and he is still one of the most important people in the AIADMK leadership and the decision-making process of the party in the western Tamil Nadu region as of 2025.
