B.Valarmathi is a veteran Tamil Nadu politician, linked with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam for many years. She came to this world on 20 October 1957 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, and later made her entry into politics via social work and party involvement. In her journey, she has become known as a formidable organiser and leader within her party, a loyal representative in the state legislature, and a person entrusted with different kinds of responsibilities.
She was initially elected as a Member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly representing Mylapore constituency in 1984. After a hiatus, she again got to the Assembly as an MLA from Alandur in 2001 and later from Thousand Lights in 2011. On these occasions, she was deeply involved in the administrative work of the legislature and also took up the representation of the constituency.
Valarmathi was part of the ministerial team in the AIADMK state governments. Backward Class and Minority Welfare Minister, she was from 14 May 2001 to 12 May 2006. The Social Welfare and Nutritious Noon Meal Programme was from 12 December 2011 to 22 May 2016. These positions held the implementation of welfare policies as well as social schemes as the major undertakings of the minister.
After the 2016 elections, she remained active in public service and party work. She was the Chairperson of Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation from January 2017 to May 2021, a post which is equal in rank to a cabinet minister.
Later, she got back to party work and, currently, in 2025, is the State Secretary of the AIADMK Women’s Wing, taking part in the organisation, mobilisation, and leadership.
