Ram Kumar Gautam was born in Narnaund, Haryana. The family environment, where his parents were quite involved in local governance, provided him with a good foundation. His father, Chander Bhan, was one of the most active people in the community, having held different positions like sarpanch and block committee head; thus, he exposed Gautam to public life at a young age. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree along with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), thus laying a foundation that would later influence his method of lawmaking.
Gautam initially could not taste success, and he had multiple attempts to get elected. Starting from the late 1970s, he tried for elections several times, including a single-handed run in 1977. Left without a win in his early days, he slowly but surely went on to consolidate his power, and he didn't stop for a minute working in his constituency. The breakthrough came his way in 2005 when he was elected from Narnaund Assembly on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket, thus marking his first major achievement. As a man of his word and a gut, he gradually became known as the most courageous politician in Haryana who fearlessly raised his voice.
He made a comeback in 2019 after leaving the Jannayak Janata Party and overpowering the ex-Minister Captain Abhimanyu from Narnaund, which was considered one of the great surprises of the election. Before the 2024 Assembly elections, Gautam rejoined the Bharatiya Janata Party and ran from the Safidon constituency, where he not only won but also reestablished his influence in state politics. In the Assembly session of 2025, he incited a debate all over the state when he pleaded with the government to necessitate parental consent for marriages.
In the non-political sphere, Gautam is fortunate to be surrounded by a family that is well-educated and has a background in law. His wife was an Associate Professor in Political Science, and his son, Rajat Gautam, is a lawyer who has also been involved in the legal fraternity. His long journey is a testament to his indomitable spirit, direct public engagement, and unwavering commitment to rural issues and social reform.
