P. Rajeev was born on January 5, 1969, in Kerala. He became active in student politics through the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), the student wing of CPI(M), during his academic years. He later emerged as a prominent CPI(M) leader in Ernakulam district and was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2009, representing Kerala. During his tenure in the Upper House (2009–2015), he was known for raising issues related to corporate governance, corruption, and public accountability. His parliamentary contributions brought him recognition as an articulate national-level leader of the party.

In the 2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections, he contested from the Kalamassery constituency and won, entering the 15th Kerala Legislative Assembly.
