After being a Member of the Legislative Assembly in Gujarat for one term, she shifted her focus to the centre and was elected to the Lok Sabha for three consecutive terms.

Poonamben has been very active, which is evident from her involvement in the various parliamentary committees and the developmental activities of the constituency. Poonamben Hemantbhai Maadam is an active politician from Jamnagar in Gujarat. She is currently a Member of Parliament from the Jamnagar Lok Sabha seat. She has been nominated by the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) to contest from the same constituency in the 2024 general elections.

She is the daughter of Hematbhai Maadam and Dinaben Maadam. Her father was a four-time independent MLA from Khambhalia from 1972 to 1990. Her grandfather, Rambhai Maadam was active in Ahir community work in the field of education. She tied the knot with a former defence officer Parminder Mahajan and the couple has a daughter. Till 2009, she was based in Delhi, but later she settled in Khambhalia. She originally belonged to Kalyanpur.

Former Jamnagar Congress MP, Virkam Maadam is her distant uncle. Vikram Maadam was not happy with the rise of Poonam in politics. While Poonam Maadam was on Congress’s probable candidates' list for the Khambhalia seat, Vikram was lobbying for Hebha Bhai Karmur’s candidature.

Later she became a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Khambhalia as a BJP candidate.
