Jignesh Mevani

Jignesh​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ Mevani was born on December 3, 1982, and his place of birth was Ahmedabad, Gujarat. With a law background, he did his higher education in Gujarat. Early on, he dipped his hands into journalism, but later transitioned to full-time social activism. Most of his works were devoted to improving the living conditions of the Dalits, demanding a minimum wage for the workers, fighting for land rights and against caste-based discrimination. Jignesh Mevani got indelibly linked with the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch and started organising rallies and legal actions all over Gujarat.

Their incident of the public flogging of Una, held in 2016, saw Mevani shoot to national fame. After this, he was seen as the main planner among the mass protests that were calling for justice, the arrest of the culprits and the giving of legal protection to the marginalised communities. The protests he led at that time were covered widely in the local and national media, and this is what made him known beyond the boundaries of Gujarat. They also proved him to be a major public voice on constitutional and civil rights of the people.

In 2017, Mevani made the decision to take part in electoral politics while still being committed to his activism. Now, he has been doing the legislative work, and at the same time, he has been going down to the streets and carrying out legal advocacy. He is a man who has never missed the chance to talk about democracy, especially when it concerns the rights of minorities, labour welfare, and federalism.

As of 2025, he is still a member of the legislative body, engaged in public movements and the national political discourse, as well as active in the political ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌arena.
