Jagadish Shettar Biography

Mr. Jagadish Shettar is a seasoned campaigner who got politics in legacy as his father was a senior activist in Jana Sangh, the predecessor of BJP. Jagadish Shettar started following his father's footmark since his college days as he joined Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, and then graduated to RSS.

He was a successful lawyer as well and practiced over two decades in the District Court of Hubali. He joined the Bharatiya Janta Party in late 80's and thereafter served the party in various capacities at various levels.

He is a six-term MLA and has served as cabinet minister, legislative party leader, leader of opposition, chief minister and BJP state president.

When BJP snatched power from Cong-JDS alliance government in 2019, Shettar was Minister of Large and Medium Scale industries excluding Sugar, Government of Karnataka.

Upset with party's decision of not giving him ticket to fight the Karnataka legislative assembly election, Jagadish Shettar left the BJP and joined the Congress party just before the election. During the 2023 assembly election, Shettar got defeated to BJP candidate Mahesh Tenginakai from the Hubli Dharwad Central constituency.
