Abdul Khaleque was born on August 1, 1966, in the Barpeta district of Assam. He became involved in public life at a relatively early stage and later entered active politics through the Indian National Congress.
He began his electoral journey in Assam politics and was elected as a Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly, marking his entry into legislative governance and regional political leadership. During this phase, he built his base in the Barpeta region.
Over time, Khaleque emerged as a recognized Congress leader in lower Assam, maintaining consistent involvement in party activities and constituency-level political work. His role expanded within the party structure as he continued to engage in regional issues.
He transitioned to national politics when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Barpeta constituency in 2019, representing the Congress party in Parliament and gaining broader political visibility at the national level.
Following his tenure in Parliament, he continued his political engagement in Assam, remaining active in both party affairs and public life at the state level.
In the 2026 election, Abdul Khaleque contested as the Indian National Congress candidate and lost after polling 85,919 votes. He was defeated by All India Trinamool Congress candidate Sherman Ali Ahmed, who secured victory with a margin of 27,561 votes.
