Girish Chandra Murmu

Girish Chandra Murmu was born in the Mayurbhanj District of Odisha on 21st November 1959.

He belongs to the Indian Administrative Service of the Gujarat cadre, 1985 batch. He served on important assignments in the State Government of Gujarat, gaining extensive experience in administrative, economic, and infrastructure fields.

Murmu then moved to the Government of India, where he held various positions including Joint Secretary in the Department of Expenditure, Special and Additional Secretary in the Department of Financial Services and the Department of Revenue, and Secretary of the Department of Expenditure.

He was appointed as the first Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

On 8th August 2020, he assumed office as the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.

His name cropped up in probes into the 2002 communal riots in the State and the contentious killings of Ishrat Jahan and three others accused of involvement in a “plot to assassinate” Chief Minister Modi.

In his spare time, Murmu likes to listen to Indian classical and Sufi music, do amateur photography, and sketch or paint. He also follows his routine gym regimen.

On a personal front, he is married to Dr. Smita Murmu. They have a daughter, Ruchika Murmu, and a son, Ruhaan Murmu.
