G. T. Devegowda was born on 22 May 1953 in Karnataka. He developed his political career through grassroots public work and steadily emerged as a recognised leader in the Mysuru belt, particularly among rural and semi-urban voters.
He rose through the Janata movement tradition and later became a prominent face of the Janata Dal (Secular). Over the years, he built a loyal political base in the Old Mysuru region, where regional identity and personal voter connect have played a major role in electoral politics.
He was first elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1994 from Hunsur constituency. He later represented Chamundeshwari constituency and became known for strong constituency outreach, legislative participation, and his continuing relevance in Mysuru district politics.
In 2018, he gained statewide attention after defeating then Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the high-profile Chamundeshwari Assembly contest. Later that year, he was inducted into the Karnataka cabinet and served as Minister for Higher Education in the JD(S)-Congress coalition government.
He remained politically active despite later internal differences within the party and continued to retain influence through his legislative role and constituency presence. In 2023, he was re-elected from Chamundeshwari, reaffirming his strong local support base.
As of 2026, he continues to be active in Karnataka politics, maintaining his influence while actively engaging in legislative responsibilities, constituency matters, regional leadership, party affairs, and broader public issues.
