Byrati Basavaraj was born on 4 February 1964 to Anjinappa and completed his education at Government Arts College in 1988. He started his political career as a member of the panchayat and then as president of the panchayat, which opened the doors for him in urban politics. His activity in public life and local government at the grassroots level paved the way into being a politician.
In the elections of 2009, he became a corporator of the Hoodi ward, through which he gained knowledge of the municipal government and the city’s daily problems. The year 2013 marked his changeover to state politics as he got elected as a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from Krishnarajapuram constituency on the Indian National Congress ticket. His first term was followed by re-election in 2018, and he was the winner of the same constituency for the second time.
He was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party starting from 2019, Byrati Basavaraj. He also took part in the Assembly elections from K. R. Puram, and his victory was by a large margin. He became a minister in the Karnataka Cabinet in 2019 under Governor B. S. Yediyurappa’s Urban Development Ministry, and this was the beginning of his association with the state executive.
He was a Cabinet Minister in the Basavaraj Bommai-led government and, in addition to that, from 4 August 2021, he has been entrusted with the Portfolios of Minister for Urban Development (excluding Bengaluru), where he looks after the development of cities in terms of planning, governance of municipalities, and provision of infrastructure in all Karnataka regions except for Bengaluru metropolitan region.
As of 2025, Byrati Basavaraj is still an elected representative for the K.R. Puram constituency and has also been given a place in the Karnataka government as a senior minister. His political career has comprised direct participation in the governance of the grassroots level, working in the municipal administration, legislative activities, and cabinet-level positions.
