Bansuri Swaraj Biography

Bansuri Swaraj (born January 3, 1984) is an Indian lawyer and politician. She is a Member of Parliament for New Delhi in the 18th Lok Sabha. She is the daughter of Smt. Sushma Swaraj, former Minister of External Affairs, and Mr Kaushal Swaraj, former Governor of Mizoram. After being born in New Delhi, she did her bachelor’s at the University of Warwick, did her Master of Studies (M.St.) at St. Catherine’s College, University of Oxford, and was a barrister-at-law of the Inner Temple.

She has been a lawyer for more than 15 years and has done the legal representation of her clients in several courts, like the Supreme Court of India. In March 2024, she was made the Bharatiya Janata Party’s candidate for the New Delhi Lok Sabha seat. She got a victory by a margin of 78,370 votes.

Her campaign mainly dealt with national issues like the abolition of Article 370, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, women’s reservation in assemblies, and building the Ram temple, besides promising to execute central schemes like Ayushman Bharat. Bansuri was the name given to her because she is like a flute, which was her mother’s love for Lord Krishna. She is combining her law knowledge with her political leadership to serve people as her mother's legacy.

In December 2025, Bansuri experienced a bereavement as her father, Swaraj Kaushal, passed away, and she conveyed her sorrow in an emotional public ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌homage.
