Dr Abdul Salam

In a significant political maneuver, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has chosen Dr. M Abdul Salam, an esteemed former Vice Chancellor of Calicut University and a recognized agronomist, as its contender for the predominantly Muslim constituency of Malappuram in Kerala for the Lok Sabha elections. This move positions Dr. Salam as a notable Muslim figure within the party, highlighting his unique position as the sole Muslim candidate among the initial list of 195 Lok Sabha candidates unveiled by the BJP.

Dr. M Abdul Salam held the prestigious position of Vice Chancellor at Calicut University from 2011 to 2015. His nomination to this role by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) underscores his substantial contributions to the field of agronomy and education. Dr. Salam's academic career is distinguished not only by his administrative roles but also by his commitment to advancing agricultural science and education.

Embracing a new chapter in 2019, Dr. Salam joined the BJP, marking a significant shift in his career from academia to politics. This transition was part of the BJP's broader strategy to enhance its appeal among minority communities by incorporating more minority figures into its ranks. The party's decision to field Dr. Salam in the Malappuram Lok Sabha seat is a testament to its efforts to diversify its representation and reach out to Muslim voters in Kerala.

Despite his distinguished career and the BJP's strategic positioning, Dr. Salam faced challenges in electoral politics. In the 2021 state elections, he contested from Tirur but was defeated by IUML's Kurukkoli Moideen. Dr. Salam managed to secure only 5.33 per cent of the votes, reflecting the competitive nature of Kerala's political landscape and the difficulties faced by new entrants in establishing a foothold.
