Adagur H. Vishwanath was born on 15 December 1949 in Krishnarajanagara, Mysuru State (now Karnataka). He completed his education at the University of Mysore and entered politics in the 1970s, building a long legislative and ministerial career.
He was first elected as a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1978, representing the Krishnarajanagar constituency. Vishwanath went on to serve three separate terms in the assembly in 1978–1983, 1989–1994, and 1999–2004, during which he held positions including Minister of State and Cabinet Minister in the Karnataka government as a Congress leader.
In 2009, Vishwanath transitioned to national politics by winning the Mysore Lok Sabha seat in the 15th Lok Sabha, defeating the incumbent and serving as a Member of Parliament until 2014. During this term, he was a member of various parliamentary committees and also served as Convenor of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) for Karnataka representatives.
In 2017, Vishwanath left the Indian National Congress and joined the Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)). He was elected as an MLA from Hunsur in 2018, but resigned and was disqualified later in 2019 during the political crisis that brought down the JD(S)-Congress coalition in Karnataka. He contested the subsequent by-election in December 2019 from Hunsur but lost to a Congress candidate.
In July 2020, he was nominated to the Karnataka Legislative Council after joining the BJP, a position he retains. Aside from politics, he authored a book on ancient parliaments, released in August 2024. As of 2026, Vishwanath continues his legislative work as an MLC in Karnataka.
