Born in a Tamil family of Chennai and later shifted to Mannargudi in Thiruvarur district, V.K Sasikala also know as Sasikala Natarajan was a close aide of late Tamilnadu CM Jayalalitha. She was with the AIADMK party for almost 30 years. After Jayalalitha's death on 5 December 2016, Sasikala elected as the general secretary on 29 December 2016, by the AIADMK general council.

On 5 February 2017, Sasikala was elected as the AIADMK Legislature Party Leader. But on February 14, 2017, Sasikala was convicted in the Disproportionate Assets case and sentenced to 4 years in Bangalore Parapana Jail. After the conviction, On August 21, 2017, Sasikala was expelled from the AIADMK party.

Later in the same year, the vindictive faction of AIADMK, founded Amma Makkal Munetra Kazhagham (AMMK) and V K Sasikala became the first president of it while her nephew T.T.V. Dhinakaran was nominated as the general secretary of the party.
