Sunil Kumar Pintu was born on August 22, 1961, in Sitamarhi, Bihar. His father's name is Shri Hari Shankar Prasad, and his mother's name is Smt. Kamla Devi. He completed his matriculation from Shri Lakshmi High School, Sitamarhi, through BSEC, Patna in 1977. He pursued his Intermediate of Arts and Commerce (IAC) from Shri Radhakrishna Goenka College, Sitamarhi, Bihar University in 1980, and further obtained a B.Sc. degree from the same college in 1982.,
He is married to Smt. Manju Devi since March 5, 1984, and they have one son and three daughters. His wife is a homemaker., Pintu's professional background before full-time politics includes being a businessperson and a social worker.
Pintu began his significant political journey as a member of the Bihar Legislative Assembly from the Sitamarhi state assembly seat, serving four consecutive terms since 2003 on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. He also held positions such as Chairperson of a Committee in the Bihar Legislative Assembly from 2007 to 2010 and served as a Cabinet Minister in the Government of Bihar from 2010 to 2013.
In 2019, he switched his allegiance to the Janata Dal (United) and successfully contested and was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha from the Sitamarhi constituency, defeating his closest opponent from RJD by a margin of 2,50,539 votes. During his tenure as an MP, he was a member of the Standing Committee on Urban Development (May 2019), the Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture (September 2019 to September 2020), and the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Culture and Tourism (September 2020 onwards).
Sunil Kumar Pintu has been involved in public discourse, notably raising questions regarding the Bihar caste survey in 2023, claiming that the enumeration of the Teli community, to which he belongs and of which he is a convener of the Teli Sahu Samaj, was undercounted. He has also faced incidents of alleged extortion calls. Recently, in October 2025, he was re-inducted into the Bharatiya Janata Party.
In November 2025, Sunil Kumar Pintu secured the Sitamarhi assembly seat, polling 104,226 votes and overtaking his closest rival, RJD’s Sunil Kumar, by 5,562 votes, adding another chapter to his long political journey.
