Sanjay Singh Biography

Sanjay Singh is an Indian politician who comes from a humble background, proof of which was noticed when he had no income, assets or property when he filed for the nominations of the Rajya Sabha. Born to parents who were teachers, he has a diploma in Mining Engineering.

Singh proved to be a dedicated advocate for social justice and commenced his career aiding the underprivileged. Over 16 years, he championed hawkers' rights, collaborating with the Democratic Socialist Party and later contributing to the National Hawkers' Association.

A key figure in the inception of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in 2012, Singh served on AAP's Political Affairs Committee and National Executive. He played a pivotal role in the Punjab and Delhi elections, led civic polls in Uttar Pradesh, and actively participated in movements for the river Gomati and against corruption in Uttar Pradesh's clean Gomati river project.

A major turn came in his career when he was arrested in October 2023 on money laundering charges related to an alleged Delhi excise scam by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). While he is not directly accused of corruption in the excise scam itself, the ED labelled him as a "key conspirator" involved in laundering the "proceeds of crime" from the alleged scam. Essentially, Singh is accused of handling illegally obtained money, rather than participating in the corruption directly.

The ED's case against Sanjay Singh largely hinges on the testimony of Dinesh Arora, a businessperson who allegedly acted as a conduit for kickbacks between certain individuals and the AAP. Arora claimed that he provided funds to Singh on behalf of others involved in the scam. However, Singh's defence argued that Arora's statements implicating Singh were inconsistent and lacked evidence. They also highlighted the absence of any concrete money trail linking Singh to the alleged illegal funds.

He was granted bail by the Supreme Court on 2nd April 2024. During the court proceedings, the ED chose not to oppose Singh's bail because of a lack of valid evidence.
