Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon began his political journey with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), where he remained active for over four decades. In 2017, he contested the Gidderbaha Assembly seat as an SAD candidate but lost to Amarinder Singh Raja Warring of the Congress by over 16,000 votes.
In 2022, he again contested from the same constituency and faced defeat by a much narrower margin of 1,349 votes against the same opponent. Alongside his political career, Dhillon is an agriculturist and the owner of Deep Transports, which operates private buses across various routes in Punjab. He completed his graduation from Panjab University, Chandigarh.
On 28 August 2024, Dhillon switched allegiance to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). His induction into AAP was met with mixed reactions, as some local party workers expressed dissatisfaction and refrained from attending the event where Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann welcomed him. Despite this, Dhillon began campaigning in Gidderbaha, with Mann hinting at his candidacy on the very day of his joining.
About seven weeks later, Dhillon was officially announced as AAP's candidate for the Gidderbaha by-election, which was necessitated after Amrinder Singh Raja Warring vacated the seat to represent Ludhiana in the Lok Sabha.
In the 2024 by-election, Dhillon made history by defeating Amrita Warring, the wife of Raja Warring and Congress's candidate, with a record margin of 21,969 votes. The BJPs candidate, Manpreet Singh Badal, a former finance minister, managed only 12,227 votes and lost his security deposit. Dhillons victory marked a significant political milestone for AAP in the constituency.
