Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal

Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal occupies a notable role as a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament in India, while also serving as the esteemed Founder Chancellor of Lovely Professional University (LPU).

He has taken the lead in implementing India's most expansive private scholarship program, granting annual scholarships surpassing Rs. 100 crores to deserving students, including those with physical disabilities. Notably, he has initiated a scholarship scheme offering full coverage specifically for students affected by spinal cord injuries.

To support these endeavours, numerous laptops have been provided to various NGOs such as the Spinal Cord Injury Association (SCIA), Saksham, Gyandeep Teaching Project, and Aaghaaz. This collaborative effort, done in conjunction with Cardiff Metropolitan University, UK, aims to improve online learning opportunities for those in need.

Following this path, he has actively engaged in community service initiatives. Under his leadership, around 1000 NSS volunteers and over 100 NCC cadets coordinate more than 400 community events every year.

He is a prominent member of the Aam Aadmi Party and became a Rajya Sabha MP from Punjab in March 2022. Currently, he is a member of the Committee on External Affairs and a member of the Committee on the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme.

Known for insightful contributions, he actively engages in parliamentary discussions, focusing on economic and educational reforms. He advocates for issues like human trafficking, farmer hardships, and economic legislation, notably supporting the Shopkeepers Welfare Bill.

His commitment extends to grassroots projects like 'Saathi' for village development and various humanitarian efforts nationwide. He demonstrates a comprehensive dedication to societal upliftment through IT initiatives, disaster relief, and healthcare improvements.

His parliamentary track record includes questioning diverse national issues, active participation in debates, and introducing impactful bills, reflecting his commitment to driving legislative change.

He fosters a culture of research and innovation, leading to numerous accolades including the highest NAAC grade A++ and recognition in prestigious rankings like THE Impact Rankings and NIRF.

He significantly upgraded sports facilities at the institution to international standards, including indoor and outdoor pools. Ms Nasreen Shaikh, an MPEd student and Kho Kho Captain at LPU was honoured with the Arjuna Award by the President. Additionally, 11 students won nine medals at the Tokyo Olympics 2021 and 40 athletes secured 22 medals at the Asian Games 2022.

On a personal front, he was born to Baldev Raj Mittal and Shanti Devi Mittal in Jalandhar on 10th September 1964. He married Rashmi Mittal in 1988 and was blessed with two children with her. As a person, he firmly believes in the principle of giving back to society.
